How Many Chickens Should a Beginner Start With? (2026 Guide)

Image
Short answer: A beginner should start with 3 to 6 hens. Chickens are flock animals and need at least 3 birds to stay healthy and keep laying. Three hens produce roughly 12–18 eggs per week, while six hens give you 24–36 eggs weekly — plenty for most families without overwhelming a first-timer. The Golden Rule: Never Keep Fewer Than 3 Chickens are deeply social flock animals. A lone chicken — or even a pair — gets stressed, bored, and often stops laying entirely. Minimum flock size: 3 birds. If one bird gets sick or dies, you still have two left. The Beginner Sweet Spot: 3–6 Hens Manageable workload: 10–15 minutes of daily care. Affordable: Feed for 4–6 hens costs about $15–$25/month. Enough eggs: 3 hens ≈ 12–18 eggs/week; 6 hens ≈ 24–36 eggs/week. Forgiving: Mistakes with 4 birds are cheap lessons. Why not just 2? With only 2, one bird dominates and bullies the other with no relief. Three or more spreads the social pressure around. Why not 10+? Beginners who start big usually re...

How to Start Raising Backyard Chickens: The Complete Beginner's Guide (2026)

Short answer: To start raising backyard chickens, check your local laws, build or buy a predator-proof coop with 4 square feet per bird inside and 10 square feet per bird in the run, choose 3–6 beginner-friendly laying breeds, and provide layer feed, fresh water, and bedding. Expect to spend $300–$600 to start and about $15–$30 per month for a small flock. Raising backyard chickens is one of the most rewarding homesteading projects you can start. Fresh eggs every morning, endless entertainment, and a real step toward self-sufficiency — no wonder over 11 million US households now keep backyard flocks. But where do you actually begin? This guide walks you through every step, from legal checks to your first egg. Step 1: Check Your Local Laws First Before buying a single chick, find out what's legal where you live. Rules vary wildly: City ordinances: Many US cities allow hens but ban roosters (noise). Some limit flock size to 4–6 birds. HOAs: Homeowner associations often have th...

How Much Space Do Chickens Need in a Coop? (2026 Guide)

Image
Short answer: Each standard-size chicken needs 4 square feet of indoor coop space and 10 square feet of outdoor run space . So a flock of 6 hens needs a 24-square-foot coop (for example, 4×6 feet) with a 60-square-foot run. Give less and you get pecking, stress, disease, and fewer eggs. Coop size is the number-one thing beginners get wrong. Most store-bought coops that claim to hold “6 chickens” comfortably fit three. Chickens that are crammed together get stressed, turn on each other, and stop laying. This guide gives you the exact space requirements per bird — for the coop, the run, roosts, and nesting boxes — plus a sizing chart so you can plan with confidence. The Golden Rule: 4 Square Feet Inside, 10 Outside The poultry-keeping world has used this rule for decades, and it holds up: Inside the coop: 4 square feet per standard chicken (sleeping and laying area only — not counting nesting boxes or feeders). Outdoor run: 10 square feet per chicken of fenced foraging ...
